THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: “Free improvisation is very important and you can achieve it through proper practice,’’ said Prof Christy Doran, renowned guitarist.
A faculty member of the School of Music, Lucerne, Switzerland, Doran was giving a lecture demonstration on ‘Development of technical patterns and skills’ to the students of Sri Swathi Thirunal College of Music on the final day of ‘Symphony of Strings’, a seminar on stringed instruments.
“It is very interesting to listen to guitar even if you don’t know how to play it. It is important to hit the proper string. The whole work should be melodious and at the same time, it should be lively also. It is quite tricky to do that, but with proper practice, you can get through,’’ he said in an interactive session with the students.
He added that the beauty of playing an instrument depends on how one presented the subject without complications. Students should get an opportunity to attend concerts and then they will be able to make out the way in which different instruments are played. Decision-making is also important while performing at a concert, he said.
Later in the day, veena maestro A. Ananthapadmanabhan led the session which focused on the importance of ornamentation in stringed instruments. There was also a cultural exchange programme in which Christy Doran played along with Ananthapadmanabhan, M. Balasubramoniam (head, Department of Mridangam), Udupi Sreedhar, Mahesh Mani and Udupi S. Sreekanth.
