'LDF Government trying to sabotage case'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy has said that the attempt being made to sabotage the case registered by the police regarding attempt to murder former Chief Minister E K Nayanar, by the present LDF Government in the state is absolutely shocking.

``All the accused in the Nayanar murder attempt case have close links with Abdul Nasser Madhani. Yet, for the sake of a few votes, the LDF Government is trying to sabotage the case,’’ alleged Oommen Chandy in a statement issued here on Sunday.

The case is highly significant as it includes attempt to murder a Chief Minister, subversive activities and fake currency deals involving many lakhs. Attempts by the LDF Government and the CPM leadership to scuttle such an important case is a matter of grave concern. This shows the degradation of the CPM which was once led by leaders like AKG and EMS and it would also cause distress to all those who believe in democracy, the Opposition Leader said.

The case was registered at the Kannur Police Station on August 12, 1999. The UDF Government, which came to power in 2001, had pursued the investigation seriously as a murder attempt against a Chief Minister was the first of its kind in the history of the state. And, on 2006, the Crime Branch had submitted chargesheets against eight men; Aamir Ali, Naseer, Sabir, Ismail, Thajudeen, Shihab, Noushad and Ansar.

``However, the present LDF Government has stopped the trial at the Thalassery Fast Track Court and transferred the case files to the Police Headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram saying that the trial had been stopped for handing over the case to the special team probing terrorist-related cases led by DIG T K Vinod Kumar. Unfortunately, the case has not been handed over yet,’’ Oommen Chandy said.
