THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Government Upper Primary School, Thampanoor, famed for the visit by American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr in 1959, celebrated its annual day in association with Karma socio-cultural organisation, Valiyasala. Most of the students studying in the school are from the lower strata of society and staying in the nearby Chenkalchoola slum colony.

 K Mahadevan, president, Karma socio-cultural organisation inaugurated the annual day celebrations and distributed prizes to the winners of arts and sports events and toppers in the examination held in the school this academic year. K P Santhosh Kumar, headmaster of the school, presided over the function.

 C Ramesh, PTA president; K J Das, staff secretary; teacher G R Jinil Jose; Krishnankutty Madavoor, trainer, Urban Resource Centre (North) and P S Santhosh, secretary, Karma socio-cultural organisation, were among those who spoke on the occasion.

 Various entertainment programmes presented by the children added colour to the annual day celebrations. Karma also provided sweets and meals to the children on the occasion.
