THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Pothencode police have arrested two women while attempting to rob Rs 1.88 lakh from a housewife.

Kalyani and Muthumari, both aged 30 and hailing from Ukkadam, near Coimbatore, were arrested on Thursday morning while they were trying to steal the money from a housewife who was returning with the cash after pledging her ornaments at a nationalised bank.

According to the police, the housewife, a native of Kattayikonam, after pledging her ornaments, hired an autorickshaw to travel to  Pothencode town. The arrested women also entered the same autorickshaw. Later, the three alighted in the town. When the housewife searched for the cash which was kept in a plastic bag, she found that it was lost.

Meanwhile, the autorickshaw drivers and the public had cornered the duo when they were trying to hire another autorickshaw.

The public had got suspicious as the duo had shown haste to move away from the location. Later, the police was informed and on a thorough inspection, the lost cash was recovered from them. The two were later remanded.
