THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a serious effort to upgrade the coaching standards of the trainers, with the Kerala State Sports Council, a state-level refresher course will be organised at Lakshmi Bai National College for Physical Education (LNCPE), Kariavattom. The course will be inaugurated by Sports Minister K B Ganesh Kumar on Monday.

The current course is the continuation of the first-phase of the refresher programme, in which 25 coaches had received training at various centres of SAI.

The refreshing course is expected to be attended by around 130 coaches, who are involved with 24 sports disciplines.

The organisers have informed that the course will pertain to imparting technical know-how on the methodology of coaching. Special attention would be given in upgrading the coaching standard at par with that of International-level.

SAI Kerala region director Dr G Kishore said that the refresher programme was tailored according to the demands of the contemporary sports world. “When you are in the pursuit of moulding fresh talents who could win laurels in the international arenas, the training module should be equally sophisticated. In the state, the Sports Council spearheads the sports training, so their coaches should be updated with modern training methodology. In the first-phase, the SAI faculty have done that and the coaches responded well,” he said.

Finding that the phase-one of the course had benefited the coaches, the council had insisted the SAI to take more coaches under their fold for training. ”The first-phase was successful and that’s why we requested the SAI to have more intake. The 130-plus coaches would be split into three groups got the training,” said sports council secretary P S Abdul Razak.

Thee second-phase the course will be earmarked by the presence of almost 50 coaches and physical trainers from Lakshadweep. The training sessions would be led by faculties drawn from SAI centres across the nation.
