THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The statue of M N Govindan Nair, the late Communist leader and former State Minister, will be unveiled at M N Park at Pattom Junction here by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at 11 am on May 2.

 The event will mark the conclusion of the over-a-year-long birth centenary celebrations of the late leader which were kicked off at his native place Pandalam, coinciding with his 100th birthday on December 10, 2010. The celebrations were held under the joint auspices of the State Government and MN Family Foundation.

 Dr Thomas Isaac MLA will preside over the valedictory function to be held at District Panchayat Hall, Pattom.

 V S Sivakumar, Minister for Health and Devaswom, will give away the M N Memorial Student Award consisting of a cash prize of ` 25,000 and merit certificate to the highest scorer in the SSLC examination from the families residing in the One Lakh Housing Scheme colonies, founded while M N was serving as Housing Minister.

 The function will be attended by Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash, CPI state secretary Panniyan Raveendran, MLAs Mullakkara Ratnakaran, Chittayam Gopakumar and V Sivankutty and poet B Sugathakumari.
