Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan on Wednesday urged the government to order a CBI inquiry into the murder of Harihara Varma, claimed to be a member of the royal family of Mavelikkara, and the stealing of precious stones from the house where he was found dead.

Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan on Wednesday urged the government to order a CBI inquiry into the murder of Harihara Varma, claimed to be a member of the royal family of Mavelikkara, and the stealing of precious stones from the house where he was found dead.

In a statement here, Achuthanandan said it was important to find out how he came to be in possession of precious stones and why did he select the house of his friend, an advocate, to sell the jewels.

A detailed inquiry is needed, he said.

Achuthanandan also asked the government to find out whether the stones  belonged to any temple or the treasures of any of the royal families.

He said the murder of Harihara Varma had strengthened the doubt that  mafia gangs engaged in the trading of jewels and idols had become active in Thiruvananthapuram.

He asked the govt to ensure that there was no  intervention to influence the case. All links connected to the case should be brought to light, the Opposition leader said in his statement.
