THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Differing voices and doubts on the efficacy of mobile truck-mounted incinerators in populated areas notwithstanding, global tenders have been invited by the Kerala Small Industries Development Corporation Ltd (SIDCO) for the supply of two such units to treat solid wastes in the Corporation area.  The competitive bids have been invited for a unit which can treat municipal solid

waste at the rate of 0.5 Mt to 1 Mt per hour and a second unit which can treat waste at the rate of 2 Mt to 3 Mt per hour.

For the first unit, the bidders should remit an earnest money deposit of Rs 4 lakh  or equivalent US dollars and for the bigger unit, the amount has been fixed at Rs 6 lakh. The pre-bid meeting will be held on February 29. Last date for the submission of bids is March 8. Bids will be opened on the same day at 3.30 p.m. Validity of offer will be six months from the date of opening of the bid.

The State Government has taken a decision recently to go in for two mobile

incinerator units of various capacities on an experimental basis, while the vexed Vilappilsala garbage plant issue still eludes a solution.

The units will cost Rs 2 crore and 3 crore respectively. The SIDCO has been assigned as the nodal agency for purchase of the units. If found feasible, the state is all set to have more units in various locations.
