THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There was little respite from the havoc caused by flash flood even late on Saturday night as water from overflowing Killiyar and Karamana river gushed into low-lying areas of the city including Attakulangara, East Fort and Karimadom colony, paralysing life in these areas completely.

The threat to the city areas intensified late in the night when the shutters of Neyyar Dam were opened. This resulted in flooding of Killiyar and Karamana river. From Karimadom colony alone, around 31 people were rescued by Fire and Rescue Services Department. Kothwal street, Attakulangara and Karimadom got submerged in water by 9 pm.

Fire and Rescue Services Department rushed to the place and started rescue operations. Rubber dinghy boats were also pressed into service. The traffic via Attakulangara had since been halted. Rehabilitation camps had been opened at Central School and Kuryathi LPS school.
