First heart valve surgery using homograft valve

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The first heart valve transplant in the state using homograft valve has been successfully conducted at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The first heart valve transplant in the state using homograft valve has been successfully conducted at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology.

The surgery was done on a 13-year-old girl child, who was admitted to the hospital in a very weak condition with holes in the blood vessel connecting the heart and the lung.

The patient who was in observation after the surgery on December 20, is recovering well and was discharged from the hospital on December 28. The surgery was done under the supervision of the head of the department of cardiac surgery K Jayakumar by a team led by Baiju S Dharan.

 The other doctors in the team included Thomas Mathew and P R Sunil.

The donors of the valves, doctors in the forensic medicine department and the doctors of the homograft valve bank also played a role in the success of the surgery.
