THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It in fact was a pleasant surprise for the inmates of Care Home at Chackai. The 102 forsaken old ones were not expecting any visitors when the students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom, arrived with loads of gifts for them. The students, the members of the school’s charity club, were on another outing to spread the message of love and caring.
In connection with Xmas celebrations a team of 30 students visited the home. They created a festive mood by singing carol songs, conducting various games and distributing gifts and Christmas cakes. The inmates were also given towels and soaps worth ` 10,000.
The students also visited Grama Jyothi National Institute for the Differently Abled at Nalanchira - a school that nurtures 42 differently abled students. The charity club members entertained the students with songs and distributed gifts to all. The club also supplied drawing materials worth ` 3400 and donated a sum of ` 10,200.
As part of the club activities the students make frequent visits to orphanages, old age homes, destitute homes and hospitals, supplying various items based on the requirements.
The club has been supplying food and medicines to the poor patients in Medical College twice a month for the past four years through the St Pius Church, Kumarapuram. With a view to help the financially poor students, the Alumni batches of 1978 and 1987 have sponsored three poor students with school fees upto class 10 on behalf of the charity club. The club also has been paying fees for 2 poor students.
The charity club consists of 60 students and 5 teachers. The club has been functioning smoothly and effectively with the support and guidance of C P Kumaran , the Vidyalaya principal.
