THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government will make all efforts to secure classical status for Malayalam, Transport and Devaswom Minister V S Sivakumar has said.

 Speaking after presenting the ‘Bhashakkoru Dollar’ Award for the best research thesis in Malayalam, instituted by the University of Kerala and FOKANA, here on Thursday, he said that the Government would make Malayalam compulsory in the school curriculum.

 ‘’It is shameful that the new generation doesn’t give importance to Malayalam. The society as a whole should make efforts to bring in a change to the scenario,’ the Minister said.

 ‘’Keralites require an attitude to love and respect their mother tongue,’’said Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr J Prabhash.

 The award was presented to Dr B Bhuvanendran for his thesis titled ‘Zachariyayude Kathakal - Oru Padanam.’ The award comprises ` 50,000 and a citation.
