THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K Madhavan Nair celebrated a birthday of sorts on Friday, January 20, 2012. It was on this day 50 years ago that he joined as Physics master at the Sainik School. "Look, this is my appointment letter,’’ says Madhavan Nair with a snaggle-toothed smile.

"I was the first master to join the school 50 years ago this day, on January 20, 1962,’’ he adds with pride.

"So this happens to be my birthday in a way.’’  Madhavan Nair left a job at the Indian School of Mines and Applied Geology, Dhanbad, to join the school. "When I arrived, there were only Colonel Somaiah and Quartermaster Thampi,’’ he recalls.

His starting salary - Rs 300, a princely sum in those days. Though he has left the school, Madhavan Nair is still a familiar face here.
