THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vilappil Panchayat will announce its decision on the Vilappilasala garbage plant on Monday. The Janakeeya Samithi, which is leading the mass agitation against the garbage plant, said that the announcement would be made in the presence of a mass delegation from the affected areas in front of the Secretariat.

The Vilappil Panchayat and the Janakeeya Samithi office-bearers said they have not lost their confidence in bringing an end to their plight even after the High Court order to reopen the plant.

A Division Bench of the High Court, on January 23, had directed the police to provide protection to the City Corporation for operating the plant.

The State Government, in a meeting held with the Samithi leaders on January 24, had requested the panchayat to allow the functioning of the plant for three months.

The leaders had asked the LSG Minister five days’ time to convey their decision after discussing the issue with the residents.

"The Government and the City Corporation have done little to find alternative ways for waste disposal. They are not genuinely concerned about the years-long plight of the residents of Vilappilsala and nearby areas,’’ said the Samithi office-bearers.

An all-part meeting held recently had also alleged that various garbage disposal projects were caught in red tape. It is learnt that the Samithi is likely to  soften its stand at the meeting with the State Government on Monday. The Samithi had held wide interactions with the public to formulate its future strategies and to sustain the mass mood against the plant.
