KSSP meet on conservation of Kadinamkulam lake

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP) would organise a convention at Thonikkadavu Junction near Kadinamkulam for the conservation of the Kadinamkulam Lake on March 4

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP) would organise a convention at Thonikkadavu Junction near Kadinamkulam for the conservation of the Kadinamkulam Lake on March 4 at 3 p m.

KSSP zonal president A Ajayakumar and zonal secretary Sunilkumar T told a news conference here on Friday that a private three-star hotel group had reclaimed a portion of the lake to construct the hotel.

They said that the land near the Thonikkadavu Junction had been purchased by the entrepreneurs with the aim of constructing the hotel some time back.

A few months ago they had erected fencing at a length of 100 m. They reclaimed around one acre of mangrove and marshy land near the backwaters in the first week of January.

They alleged that the people behind the hotel project had influenced the local bodies to reclaim the land, violating the Coastal Regulation Zone Act.

They said the permit for constructing the hotel was given by the Chief Town Planner in an application submitted through the Panchayat Secretary.  They said besides the Coastal Regulation Zone Act, various rules were violated by the hotel group. They alleged serious lapses on the part of the Panchayat Secretary, Kadinamkulam.

They pointed out that the village officer was now raising the doubt whether the reclaimed land was part of the backwaters. But the satellite picture of the lake available in the Internet would clear such doubts.

The KSSP asked the Panchayat Secretary to initiate urgent action to restore the earlier condition of the area and recommend to the District Collector to evict the  encroachers. Poet SugathaKumari would inaugurate the convention. KSSP former president C P Narayanan would preside over the meet. N K Sasidharan Pillai, T Peter, Mercy Alexander, R Ajayan and  G Suresh would speak.
