A search for smartest IT kids in Thiruvananthapuram

IT quizzes, digital painting for the upper primary section and Malayalam typing were the highlights of the second day of the district-level IT@school Mela at the District Project Office at Jagathy on Friday. The two-day Mela, which began on Thursday, was part of the science-mathematics-social science work experience mela which is being held in different venues such as the SMV School and Government Model School, Thycaud.

What does WiFi stand for? What modern day equipment was demonstrated in India for the first time on July 31, 1995? Which institution has the motto ‘Harmony at Work’? These were some of the questions hurled at the 24 participants of the IT quiz, which was held separately for upper primary, high school and higher secondary school students.

“We have 13 competitions with 24 participants in each,” said District Coordinator K K Sajeev. “They were the winners of the competitions held at the sub-district levels.”

Events like multimedia presentation and digital painting were meant to test the students’ familiarity with the software and applications which are taught to them at school as part of the project such as GIMP, Open Office Impress and HTML, he added.

“For example, we teach Xpaint for the IT@school project,” said Sajeev. “So we will see how effectively they use the tools within the space of one hour to ‘paint’ a picture for the digital painting competition.”
