Social Welfare Department planning to take over poor homes: Minister

Panchayat and Social Welfare Minister M K Muneer said here on Wednesday that the Social Welfare Department has plans to take over poor homes in the state for its better administration. “At present, we have limitations in intervening in their functioning,” he said.

Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, the Minister said that he received the Social Welfare Director’s report regarding the molestation attempt on a female inmate and escape of male inmates of the Sri Chitra Poor Home here.

“Strict action will be taken against the culprits,” he said. The minister said the department had prepared an action plan for improving the functioning and revamping the poor homes.

“The plan which will be implemented in a year aims to prevent male inmates from entering the world of crime. Another project ‘Our Responsibility to Children’ will also be launched soon,” he said.  The minister said that incentives would be given to local bodies which submitted plan projects and secured clearance on time. It has been decided to provide 400 assistant engineers and more staff in grama panchayats.
