THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two Himalayan bears from Nagaland Zoological Park in Rangapahar are waiting for their journey to God’s Own Country. The only hitch is that the tiger enclosure in the Nagaland Zoo - is not yet ready to accommodate the two tigers that Thiruvananthapuram zoo is ready to give in exchange.

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) had sanctioned the transfer nine months ago, stipulating a six-month period to complete all procedures for the transfer. During the time, the city zoo had renovated its bear enclosure. But the sanction expired in six months, as there was work left on the tiger enclosure in Nagaland Zoo. Now, the CZA has renewed its sanction.

Department of Museums and Zoos Director B Joseph says that talks are on between him and the Chief Wildlife Warden of Nagaland Forest Department. He says that the bears will be transferred by road.

At present, the city zoo has a Himalayan bear named Bhavani. CZA allowed the transfer as Bhavani has already crossed her breeding age and her partner died last year.

But what if she does not accept the two new bears, or vice versa? “Bhavani is a sweet, pleasant bear. There will be no problems on her part,” testifies the zoo veterinarian Dr Jacob Alexander.

He says that it will be easier for the new bears to adapt to Kerala. Unlike other Indian states, Kerala’s climate does not oscillate between extreme hot and cold, and remains moderate right through the year. He feels that the bears might miss hibernation, but is sure to love the rainy season. The zoo officials have Bhavani for proof, who they say, thoroughly enjoys getting drenched.

The zoo is also ready with a thoughtful delight for the bears, during summer. They will be given blocks of ice, with fruits at their core. Can there be a better way to unwrap the candy? Thiruvananthapuram zoo is ready for the new bears. If only, Nagaland zoo could hurry up.
