Directive to Stop Dredging Work in Lake

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: District Collector Biju Prabhakar has directed to stop the dredging work in Akkulam lake. The order was following the assessment that the ongoing work was not effective and it was a wastage of money.

“Dredging will not be allowed till further orders from the government,” the Collector said.

The removal of water hyacinth from the lake would continue. The decision was taken in a meeting on Akkulam lake revival at the Collectorate on Saturday.

Travancore Cements Limited has been doing dredging in 23 hectares of the water body since 2010 onwards.

It was intended to complete the project within 18 months. But the dredging was found ineffective owing to the disposal of waste in the lake flowing from T S canal, Parvathy Puthanar and Amayizhanjan canal.
