Rain: State to Approach Centre

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  In the wake of large-scale destruction caused by monsoon rains that lashed the state from June, Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash said that the government will submit a memorandum to the Centre requesting assistance.

He said this during a video conferencing session with the district collectors here, for evaluating the loss incurred by the monsoon rains.  As per the primary reports, the state had suffered a loss of more than Rs 150 crore, he said, and added that the memorandum will be submitted after the final report on the loss is received.

Prakash said 122 persons were killed and more than 8,000 houses destroyed in the rains. Standing crops in about 12,500 hectares were destroyed and the loss was estimated at Rs 100 crore.  The minister said an amount of `178 crore had been disbursed to district collectors ahead of monsoon.
