Church heads should not comment on the selection of candidates for the upcoming LS elections. Members of the community can vote for candidates of their choice, the Latin Archbishop of T’Puram Dr M Soosai Pakiam said here on Tuesday.

The heads of the Church will not demand that a particular person should be made the candidate in a particular seat, Soosai Pakiam said here.  Church heads can comment on the interests of the community or say that the community should vote for candidates who protect its interests, he said. In an election, the members of the community can vote for candidates of their choice, he added.  Since the Church represents a community and a religious entity, it prefers to remain a moral power. He also evaded a question on the BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi saying he did not wish to comment on individuals. No one has approached the Church so far seeking support for the elections, the Archbishop said.

‘Law Should be Equal to Everyone’

The law of the land should be equally applicable to everyone, the Archbishop said in reply to questions on the Centre’s stand not to invoke the anti-piracy SUA in the Italian marines’ case.  The gov t should take adequate measures to ensure the safety of fishermen, he said.
