KPCC president V M Sudheeran on Thursday called upon the government to form a committee in each district comprising of officials from various departments to look into complaints related to sand mining and quarry-related issues.

In a letter to Forest and Environment Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, he said that the committees should be formed under the respective Collector and should include representatives of the Revenue, Police, Mining and Geology, Environment departments and Pollution Control Board.

Sudheeran said that these committees should take steps to curtail all unlawful activities and also those which are against public interest. He said that though quarrying and sand mining were allowed in certain regions, large-scale illegal mining and quarrying were alleged to be taking place in certain regions.

Mining and quarrying rights are given even in regions where they are a threat to the environment and people. All these should be looked into, he said in the letter.
