Award for Ecologist S Faizi

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ecologist S Faizi was honoured with the Lifetime Achievements Award at the third edition of World Biodiversity Congress.

An advocate of UN Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) from the late 80s, Faizi went on to become the first chairperson of CBD Alliance, a global platform for environmental organisations. He has served as member of the CBD Expert Group on Biodiversity for Poverty Eradication, and an advisor to G-77 in negotiations related to various ecological issues.

“ I have been involved with CBD right from the days of negotiating the treaty. That is a kind of acknowledgement for my contribution to the CBD treaty. I feel happy about this,” he said.

He has worked with UNESCO and IUCN. He was also the expert member of Plachimada High Power Committee. At present he is the biodiversity advisor to the Forest Departments in West Bengal and Sikkim as well as UNEP.

The Congress organised by Global Scientific Research Foundation and Institute for Nature Conservation (Government of Serbia) was held at Mokra Gora Nature Reserve in Serbia from October 26 to 29.
