Loss of Eyesight: Kerala HRC Orders Rs 75,000 Compensation for Four

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has ordered the government to pay a compensation of Rs 75,000 each to four persons who lost their eyesight following surgery at the Nedumangad Government Hospital.

Seenath, 51, Prabha Kumari, 47, Ramani, 48, and Omana, 60, had lost their eyesight following a surgery at the hospital on November 13, 2014. The doctor who performed the surgery had told the four persons that they would get back their vision three weeks after the surgery. However, when they approached the doctor after six months, it was found that they had lost the vision completely. Though the patients were referred to the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, there was no improvement in their vision.

The Commission had sought a report from the Health Department, which had said that there was no negligence on the part of the doctor. On November 13, as many as 500 surgeries were held and only four of them had lost eyesight, the Health Department said in the report. It also said that the operation theatre had been closed after the incident and a new theatre was being constructed.
