Artists look to do away with cliched forms of art

An art show is on at the Durbar Hall Art Gallery in Kochi which aims to break the stereotypessurrounding art.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Have you ever tried reading the name of colours backwards? Quite eccentric, right? To make a unique statement, five artists from Kochi have joined together to exhibit their distinctive works through the ‘Bad and Mad show’ which began at the Durbar Hall Art Gallery on November 1.

"Our main goal is to break stereotypes with how people interpret art,” shares Surendran P K, one of the artists.

So, why choose a different name for an exhibition? “The name has evoked a lot of curiosity. Our works have been treated differently. For example, Surendran P K’s geometrical work on names of colours written backwards explicity states that we want our work to be viewed differently. We are trying to stray from the norm,” shares Sunil Vellarpadom, whose hand made charcoal work on the thirty different expressions of the monkey has created a buzz.

There is no common theme for the exhibition which also has works of Nandan P V, Vipin Nair and Asha Nandan.

The artists have questioned the need for rules and composition in art. For example, Vipin has focused on landscapes done in gel pens. When people think about landscapes, the initial thought is that it presents a very peaceful image. However, Vipin’s landscapes have included nude women in the frame, which completely disturbs the image. “ It is very powerful,” shares Sunil.

P V Nandan has focused on the Bison, a wild animal found in forests, while Aasan Nandan has worked on two birds done in soft pastel.

The Bad and Mad Show will conclude on November 5.
