A dig at rote learning

Embodying perfectly the sense of abandon that accompanies the completion of the final exam is a new rap song ‘Venum Macha Holiday’ recently released on YouTube.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Anybody who’s completed Class XII will be able to recall just the kind of ordeal that it was - the endless hours and sleepless nights spent poring over books and the tense moments until the final exam is over. Embodying perfectly the sense of abandon that accompanies the completion of the final exam is a new rap song ‘Venum Macha Holiday’ recently released on YouTube.

Curiously, the song, which was even broadcast on Sun TV, was written and performed by Dhanush, a Thiruvananthapuram-based student, and produced at Studio Dot Thought.

Says Vinod Hariharan, Creative Head at the studio and Music Producer with over 15 years of experience in the industry, “I came across Dhanush as part of my talent-scouting expeditions. Among a number of songs he had written, I was particularly impressed by this one, as it somewhat satirically depicted the system of rote education.”

Venum Macha Holiday’ was recorded at Studio Dot Thought in Dhanush’s voice, but finding a producer to make a video wasn’t easy. After nearly two years, they decided to make a video with whatever resources they had, and the video was finally launched on YouTube on June 15.

Vinod zeroed in on the video because it resonated with his own views about the education system in the country. “I have time and again witnessed several people with talent that hardly gets nurtured or even acknowledged. That is also the reason I try to encourage budding talent in music, to give them a chance to get noticed,” he adds.
