THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: "Communists always wanted to break India and they never believed in the Constitution," Saurabh Kumar Sharma, ABVP leader and joint secretary of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union, said on Monday. He was speaking about the controversies at JNU, at a press meet organised by the students' union here.

"But now they are diverting attention to 'garibi' and women's issues. And they get support from the Congress," he said. Sharma blamed Leftist professors in the universit y for marring the careers of students who were opposed to their ideologies.

ABVP unit president of Central university of Hyderabad (HCU), Susheel Kumar, who was at the centre of a controversy over the death of research student Rohith Vemula, also accompanied Sharma. Kumar said he was ready to undergo any punishment if proved guilty. According to him, those who protested against capital punishment were showing hypocrisy by baying for the blood of those allegedly behind the death of Vemula.

"The recent protest at HCU has affected the normal functioning of the university," he said.
