Residents of Thycaud ward are set to get a lesson on effective waste management techniques from students.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Residents of Thycaud ward are set to get a lesson on effective waste management techniques from students. The ‘green army’ volunteer group was formed by the Corporation among school and college students to spreading awareness and members will intensify the Corporation’s source-level waste management mission through propagating kitchen bins.

Students and teachers from 11 schools participated in a training camp at the Model Boys HSS in Thycaud. The first session for the group was held during the summer vacation at four locations.
Sessions on water conservation, environment, various waste management techniques, segregation of waste at source and the ill effects of burning waste were part of the camp.
The Corporation plans to train more students to expand the green army to other wards and the mission will also include scouts and guides, and students who are members of NSS, NCC, SPC and SSA experts along with volunteers from various feeder organisations.

The training programmes are being led by voluntary groups like Sahridaya, Care to Others, Make A Difference, Recycle Bin, Prakrithi, and Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad. The Corporation campaign on waste management called ‘freedom from waste’ involves creating awareness, conducting surveys to find the waste management habits of households, setting up kitchen bins and cleaning water bodies. The green army will work in tandem with residents’ association in the mission.
