THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a freak incident,a  teenager on Thursday stabbed his mother with a student compass near the South Gate of the State Secretariat. The  woman, who is recuperating at the Medical College Hospital, was stated to be out of danger.

The victim was identified as Deepa,35, hailing from Puliyarakkonam. She was stabbed on the neck and stomach and the injuries were not too deep, according to the MCH authorities.

“The woman, who is employed as a shop assistant, and her son were not on good terms for some time now. They had a quarrel while walking on the footpath near the South Gate on Thursday morning,” said Cantonment SI Shafi.

It was timely action on the part of some anti-stray dog activists, who were staging a protest before the Secretariat, which literally saved the woman’s life.

Some of the boy’s relatives told the police  the boy’s parents had been estranged. His father was now living with another woman. Quoting the relatives, police said, the woman was seeing a person for the past few weeks. “The man started living at the woman’s house a week ago. The boy objected to this on the grounds that his 15-year-old sister was living in the same house,” the SI said.

Unable to convince his mother, the boy left home three days ago. Since then he has been living at his uncle’s home. And on Thursday, the boy came to the city to meet his mother following which the incident occurred.
