Human rights commission orders closure of illegal quarries

The state human rights commission has directed authorities to close down quarries which are functioning without licence.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state human rights commission has directed authorities to close down quarries which are functioning without licence.

The Commission also sought a report from the authorities concerned on demands that families of the quarry mishap victims should be provided proper compensation and the injured should be given free treatment.  

Commission acting chairperson P Mohanadas asked the District Collector and the Director of Mining and Geology Department to submit a report before  January 3. According to complainant P K Raju, around 90 quarries are functioning without licence in the capital. The complainant said such illegal quarries in Thiruvananthapuram district  are functioning with the covert support of government officers.
