Three youths go swimming, drown in river near Attingal

Three youths, including two brothers, drowned in the Vamanapuram river near Attingal on Sunday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Three youths, including two brothers, drowned in the Vamanapuram river near Attingal on Sunday.

The deceased are Sharjuddeen alias Shajir, 20, son of Shamsuddeen, Mohammed Shah, 20, and his younger brother Ahmed Shah alias Shahmon,19, sons of Shamsuddeen. The three of them were residents of Vanchiyoor near Attingal.

Attingal police have registered a case in connection with the incident.

According to police, the incident took place around 6 pm when the three went for a swim at the river near the pump house at Attingal.

As the youths were familiar with the place, the locals did not stop them though that part of the river is considered to be dangerous. They jumped into the river and eventually were swept away by the strong undercurrents. The local residents stationed at the banks of the river immediately informed police and fire and rescue team.

The fire force rushed to the spot and fished out the bodies with the help of locals. The bodies have been shifted to the morgue of Government Hospital at Chirayinkeezhu. The bodies will be handed over to the relatives after a post-mortem to be held on Monday. All of them were working at a furniture shop in Attingal, police said.
