THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: City-based government employee M S Sunil Kumar has found a new passion. The debutant filmmaker will soon release his first feature film Myth which will explore the folk art of Chakyarkoothu. The film will be released soon.

“The narration of the story is driven by the chakyarkoothu, a folk art which usually incorporates a commentary on social issues. It is the folk art which connects the main plotline of the story with the issues which I wish to focus on,” said Sunil.

The one-and-a-half hour film tells the story of a ten-year-old child neglected by her parents Viswanathan Chakyar and Bhanumathi. It is an attempt to highlight the neglect children feel.

Sunil, who has also scripted for the film said, “Though I have never done any filmmaking courses, offbeat movies have always been an interest. I always believe in conveying a deeper social message through a film such aschild labour. At some point of time, children themselves begin to believe this is very normal,” he said.

Though the filmmaker  has highlighted the negative side of society, he offers solutions in the latter half.

“Children should be taught how to be close to nature. They should grow up to be spiritual and should have curious minds and the thirst for knowledge,” he said.

The filmmaking enthusiast has earlier done a documentary titled ‘Thyagarajan’ on Kilimanoor Thyagarajan, a professor at the Swathi Thirunal School of Music. “After Balamuralikrishna, he is the only other musician in South India who can play the Viola, a bigger version of Violin,” said Sunil.

“The cast does not have any established actors. Except for Balakrishna Varma who is another pivotal character, all are amateurs,” he said.  Sunil Kumar has already planned another film Theeyattam.
