THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Administrative Reforms Commission chairman V S Achuthanandan has demanded the LDF Government to ensure the fishermen families in Vizhinjam, who have launched a stir against the seaport project, are duly compensated and are offered a proper rehabilitation package.

“It is only fair to consider their plaint the port will destroy their homes and livelihood,” he said. “Such projects should be implemented not by causing inconvenience to the people of an entire region. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and the High Court have pointed out the project entails financial loss for the state.

But, beyond that, a situation is emerging where it adversely affects the lives of residents and fishermen.” He also said the problems in the Vizhinjam deal, to which the CAG and the court have drawn attention, cannot be pushed away as trivial. Achuthanandan had attempted to meet the demonstrators on Wednesday, but was prevented by the police from doing so on security grounds.
