THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: To make summer vacations more fruitful for children, a full-filled camp ‘Kerala Bhasha Padashala’ is being organised by the State Institute of Languages at Vylopilli Samskriti Bhavan. The students between the age group of 10 and 20 years can be part of this two-month camp. The camp to teach the proper usage of Malayalam was inaugurated by Prof Karthikeyan Nair, director, Indian Institute of Languages.

He highlighted the fact that with English being taught in schools and colleges, children these days often don’t read and write their mother language.  In the camp, students will be exposed to classes on various topics including pronunciation, sentence structure and formation, riddles, proverbs, writing styles and the art forms of Kerala. Prof Karthikeyan said, “Over the years, usage of Malayalam has been deteriorating and that led the government to make it a compulsory subject in all the schools.”

A textbook was also released during the inauguration to promote the correct usage of Malayalam. The first copy was presented to Malayalam Mission director Suja Susan George.Vattaparambil Sreedharan gave the first class enlightening the students about the alphabets and Dr Biju Balakrishnan, a poet,  took classes in poetry.

These classes will go on for two months with a time duration of 150 hours. The classes are divided into two different divisions that is 10-15 and 15 to 20. These free classes will be taken by popular and well-known personalities.

In the second day of the camp, Nadavattom Balakrishnan took sessions making it more easy for students to learn Malayalam. Dr P Soman also took classes for the students where the majority of them were from CBSE and ICSE schools where the Malayalam language is not considered a compulsory subject. A book ‘ Kerala Bhasha Padavalli’ was also released and is available at Rs 100.
