Thiruvananthapuram: Six arrested for hartal violence

Six people were arrested in hartal-related violence across the district. The Cantonment police arrested four people for obstructing traffic near Palayam.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Six people were arrested in hartal-related violence across the district. The Cantonment police arrested four people for obstructing traffic near Palayam. The four have been identified as Muhammed Shan, 27, Ramees, 27, Ayyub, 31, and Muhammed Nihal, 26.  They hail from Karakkamandapam in the city and had assembled to enforce traffic obstruction after responding to a hartal call on social media.

Meanwhile, Balaramapuram police recorded the arrest of two people for ransacking autorickshaws while carrying out a procession in connection with the hartal. Shanavas and Arif, both 27, were arrested and cases were registered against 50 people who could be identified. 

The police said a group of hartal supporters, who had assembled under the label of ‘Janakeeya Koottayma’, damaged three autorickshaws while carrying out a procession. In several parts of the district, traffic movement was obstructed and shutters were forcefully downed. Such incidents were reported from Panavoor, Azheekode, Chullimanoor, Tholicodu, Chalai, Attakulangara, Beemapally, Manacaud, Aryanadu and Kaniyapuram.
