Aksharasree survey goes off without hitch, thanks to student volunteers

Around 150 students of University College set a model by volunteering to participate in compiling the list of beneficiaries of the Aksharasree project. 

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:Around 150 students of University College set a model by volunteering to participate in compiling the list of beneficiaries of the Aksharasree project. In a statement, office-bearers of Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority appreciated the efforts of students in compiling the details of beneficiaries who could not continue their studies in schools as well as those who are illiterate. As many as 14,318 students have participated in the survey process which was held on July 14.

“The compilation of the survey in the Corporation-level began on Thursday. Around 150 students are actively participating in the process even in odd hours. The student participation will lead to a healthy change in the field of education,” said Anilkumar, college principal.

NSS programme officer Manoj is overseeing the survey process. The survey was conducted by classifying the 2.5 lakh houses in the corporation limits into various clusters. The classification is based on literacy, fourth grade, seventh grade, tenth grade and higher secondary grade of the identified persons. Literacy Mission director P S Sreekala said the list would be published soon and the classes will begin on August 15.

The project, which is being undertaken by the State Literacy Mission and the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, is being carried out in all 100 wards.  Classes are being planned for 2,500 persons with an estimated 25 persons in each ward. Those who pass the exam after three months’ lessons can join the Class IV equivalency course. Those who complete this can study for free till the HS equivalency course. Literacy Mission also intends to make use of the facilities in libraries and other public education institutions.
