THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) has already been hailed as a perfect platform for students to showcase their works.

Many budding filmmakers could prove their skill under different categories, including animation movies, campus films, short and long documentary and music videos. And, utilising the opportunity to the fullest are the students of  K R Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts in Kottayam.

“The students have made film and documentaries as part of their projects. Some are shot on the campus premises,” said Raj Govind, secretary of students council.

Nipin Narayanan, a student from the institute whose film ‘Arimpara’ was screened, says the fest provides a creative and receptive platform for aspiring filmmakers with limited resources. Arimpara deals with how a casual conversation between two men in a bar unravels a strange connection between them.

Many other works from the institute have garnered attention at the fest. ‘Pissed off’, ‘Curiosity’ and ‘Survival’, in the animation movie category, kept the viewers hooked while  ‘Nayattu’ and ‘Pakalkkinavu’ were screened in the campus film category.  Music videos made by students include ‘Fragments’ and ‘Pallikkoodam’.

Another student who won appreciation for his work is Indrajith K R. His film  ‘Death-dreams-suicide’  was hailed unique for its poetic and experimental nature. The film used vintage objects as props while narrating the tale of a boy who attempts suicide. “I wanted to give the film a different perspective so I shot it in two different sequences. It was part of my project and the entire film has been shot in Kottayam. We are honoured to showcase our work at IDSFFK,” says Indrajith.

Young participation

The festival has turned a platform for the lovers of documentaries and short films to explore the diversity in films shot by filmmakers from around the globe. It has been crafted in such a way that the film lovers can see different themes and techniques besides serving as an occasion to improve their craft. A large number of students from various campuses and universities were also present to enjoy the fest.
