THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vizhinjam police have arrested a mother and two other family members for killing a man who was mentally unsound and violent, a case which was earlier considered to have occurred due to cardiac arrest.

Nirmala, 44, her daughter Vineetha, 24, and Vineetha’s husband Joy, 31, were arrested for killing Vinu, a 25-year-old, who regularly attacked his family members, including his mother and sister, due to mental illness. Four of Joy’s accomplices were also arrested for helping him execute the crime. They are  Flexin, 24, Jijin, 20, Sajeev, 24, and Hareesh alias Krishna, 21. All the accused are from Adimalathura.

Police said Vinu’s decomposed body was found in his family house at Adimalathura on June 5. He was staying there alone as his family members had moved to another place due to his violent behaviour.  They even kept the address of their new rented place a secret, concerned about their safety. However, the family members used to send him cooked food through children in the neighbourhood.

On the day prior to the murder, Vinu accidentally met his mother Nirmala on the road and attacked her. The enraged family members plotted to eliminate Vinu and strangulated him using a towel. Since the autopsy revealed nothing suspicious, the police considered it a natural death. However, some of the villagers of the coastal belt, who had their own share of doubts about the death, overheard Joy and his friend speaking about the murder while drinking in a local bar. They apprehended the duo and handed them over to the police.
