426 ponds to be dug in seven panchayats of Thiruvananthapuram

With an aim to replenish the water table of the Nemom block panchayat, as many as 426 ponds will be dug across seven grama panchayats.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With an aim to replenish the water table of the Nemom block panchayat, as many as 426 ponds will be dug across seven grama panchayats. According to block panchayat president L Sakunthala Kumari, the ponds will come up at Maranalloor, Balaramapuram, Pallichal, Malayinkeezhu, Vilappil, Vilavoorkal and Kalliyoor grama panchayats under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. She said the technical and financial assistance for the same will be provided by the Haritha Keralam Mission.

“The seven grama panchayats consist of 142 wards. The plan is such that in each ward we will dig three ponds. The works of 14 ponds have already been completed at Pallichal, Kalliyoor and Malayinkeezhu and the remaining ones will be completed within this year itself,” said Sakunthala Kumari. The other initiative that will be undertaken at the block panchayat towards water conservation is the recharging of 700 wells, spread over seven panchayats.
