THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The death of a woman and her nine-month-old child at Puthenthope on Wednesday prima facie appeared to be a case of murder-suicide, and no evidence of foul play has been detected so far, the Kadinamkulam police said.

Anju, 23, a resident of Venganoor, was found charred to death in the washroom at her husband, Raju Joseph’s residence, while their son David, who sustained severe burns, was hospitalised. However, he later succumbed to injuries.

Police sources said the incident could be a murder-suicide case as no other person was present in the house when the incident took place. “The incident occurred between 5.30 pm and 6 pm when no one was in the house. The couple seems to have had personal issues which could have led to the incident,” an officer said.

Raju had gone to watch a football match nearby and spotted the two lying in the washroom upon returning. Alleging suspicion, Anju’s father, Pramod, had demanded a detailed probe. He said Raju regularly maimed Anju physically for questioning his extra-marital affair. The duo tied the knot in November 2021. The sources said they are yet to find evidence that supports the allegation. Meanwhile, in his statement, Raju said Anju had suicidal tendencies.
