e-learning virtual classes yet to come of age

Students have to attend virtual classes twice a week; digital classes every day.

VIJAYAWADA: Virtual classrooms in Krishna district are mostly remaining shut these days due to the existing digital classrooms. Though students are showing interest in taking these classes, teachers are finding it difficult to accommodate a virtual class in the regular schedule. In Krishna district, a total of 47 schools are equipped with digital classrooms and 28 schools with virtual classrooms. In majority of the schools, digital classrooms have been replaced with virtual classroom units in the last week of July. As per the schedule, students must take part in virtual interactive sessions through virtual classes twice every week. Apart from this, the students should also take digital classes every day.

However, in majority of the schools, the school management is skipping both the digital and virtual classes and making  students follow textbooks. In some cases, the schools are taking only digital classes, even though they are equipped with virtual units and making the students prepare notes by themselves without any teaching. “The department provided virtual units to all the municipal schools in Krishna district so far. But issues like assigning a class and teaching through virtual mode is becoming more hectic. As they have installed the digital copy in the school systems, we prefer  to take digital classes.

Virtual classes are leading to interruptions while teaching and the systems get jammed after a couple of classes. In the current schedule, we are finding it hard to accommodate virtual classes as they were not listed earlier during the commencement of the academic year,” opined M Satyanarayana, Vice Principal of ZPHS Nunna.Officials cite that the staff is facing trouble in handling these systems, due to which teachers are failing to coordinate with each other and take the class.

Krishna district Deputy DEO K Ravi Kumar said, “Firstly, the teachers and the staff should be enthusiastic about taking virtual classes. The students are quite interested in both digital and virtual classes. We will certainly take note of the troubles and make sure that there is no interruptions.” Though digital classes are in function since last academic year, the 47 schools in have undertaken only 265 hours of digital teaching in the whole academic year.
