VIJAYAWADA: Hundreds of students gathered at Tummalapalli Kalakshetram and sought higher allocation by the state government for mess and cosmetic expenses in welfare hostels.

The Students Federation of India (SFI) state committee had given a call for Chalo Vijayawada rally in which a large number of students from across the State took part.

Addressing the gathering, MLC Boddu Nageswara Rao said that the state government must stick to its promises given before elections.

He demanded the government to increase the allocation of funds for mess and cosmetic expenses to those staying in welfare hostels in the State. He further said that the government is taking a wrong step by closing the hostels instead of developing them.

Speaking to Express, SFI state president Noor Mohammad said, “The state government promised us to hike mess allocation from R750 to R1500 as well as cosmetic charges. However, it is yet to be implemented and students are facing problems with this insufficient amount. Moreover, even the money is not being paid regularly and is pending for months. Government officials should consider our demands and implement them soon. If they fail to do so, we would carry on with our protests.”
