Motorists, take a cue from 9-yr-old champion for helmets

A class four student of Ravindra Bharthi Public school, Prasad is on a mission to create awareness among the public on helmet usage.

VIJAYAWADA: Despite several attempts by city police to enforce helmet rule, a majority of the motorists are still taking to the roads without wearing a helmet. But what motorists are giving a miss, T Jayachandra Prasad has realised the importance of a helmet at a very young age.  A class four student of Ravindra Bharthi Public school, Prasad is on a mission to create awareness among the public on helmet usage.

Wearing a helmet and sporting a signboard with the message “Use Your Helmet” on his bicycle, the nine-year-old made many fall for him at the Run for Unity, conducted on the occasion of National Unity Day on Monday. 

City Police Commissioner Gautam Sawang met the young boy on Wednesday in his office. He praised the young kid for his service to the society. “At a time when many elders are giving wearing helmet a miss, this boy is trying to create an impact with his campaign. He is not only inspiring the public but has also inspired the police,” said Sawang. Lauding the child’s effort, Sawang presented him a new bicycle. 

Jayachandra’s father T Prasad said that his son does not spare anyone in the family to go without helmets. “He made sure that all our family members wear helmets while driving before taking out the campaign,” said Prasad. 

Prasad told TNIE that he likes experimenting new things and campaigning for helmet use is a hobby that he has cultivated recently. “I am very happy that commissioner sir appreciated my campaign,” said the elated Jayachandra who would carry on his campaign on his new bicycle. He further said that he is planning to take out a campaign on Children’s Day. “I want to make every father realize the importance of wearing helmets on November 14. Everyone should wear helmet and protect themselves from road accidents,” he quipped.
