Woman declared brain-dead after hit by drunk cop in Vijayawada

Accident took place when police constable was trying to overtake techie, brother

VIJAYAWADA: A city techie was declared brain-dead due to the injuries she suffered after she met with an accident late on Tuesday here. The person responsible for the accident is a police constable who was riding in an inebriated state.The victim was identified as Chinnabattini Mythri Tejaswini (27) and the accused constable was Katati Srinivas, who works with the City Armed Reserve (CAR) wing.  

Tejaswini was on her way home after shopping with her brother Michael Raviteja in a two-wheeler on Tuesday.Eyewitnesses said the constable was in an inebriated state and was driving very rashly.The accident took place when the constable was attempting to overtake the victims and hit them with his vehicle from behind, police said.As a result, Tejaswini fell on the road and suffered severe head injuries.
Her brother rushed her to a government hospital in an auto-rickshaw. Later, she was moved to Metro Hospital for better treatment.

Surya Rao Pet Circle Inspector N Satyanarayana told Express that  Tejaswini has been working for an IT multi national company in Chennai for the last two years. She had come to her home in Gunadala on Saturday.“Tejaswini, who was the pillion rider, sustained head injuries. After looking at the extent of injuries, as blood was oozing out of her nose and ears, the doctors referred her to Metro Hospital. The doctors at the private hospital declared her brain-dead,” the circle inspector said. .

Following a complaint by Michael Raviteja, Surya Rao Pet police took Srinivas into custody and suspended him from duties immediately. Police recorded statements of family members and a case under section 338 of IPC was registered against him.“The accused police constable Srinivas was previously suspended. He has been sent to remand,” city police Commissioner Gautam Sawang said.

Parents pledge daughter’s organs

The father of the brain-dead patient Tejaswini, Chinnabattini Vardana Rayalu, told TNIE that her daughter’s vital organs would be donated to other patients through Jeevandan Trust. He said Tejaswini was drawn towards Jeevandan’s initiation in past and helped the poor. After doctors counselled the members of her family for organ donation, they gave their consent for it. “My daughter’s organs will give new lease of life to patients who are in need of organ transplant,” the victim’s father said. Vardana Rayalu works as a clerk at Bishop Azariah School for Girls near IGMC Stadium in Vijayawada.
