VIJAYAWADA: Patamata police have arrested two persons for cheating more than 200 persons in the name of online prostitution. The arrests were made in Bengaluru on Friday evening. Following complaints lodged by some residents of Patamata, the police had registered a case and formed a special team for identification of the culprits.
On Thursday, TNIE reported that residents of colonies in the area had complained to the police that strangers came knocking on their doors, usually at late hours, in search of sex workers they had already paid for.
With information, such as mobile numbers of the organisers and details of the bank accounts in which the customers deposited money for availing services of sex workers, the police was able to trace the accused’s location. They were taken into custody on Friday.
Commenting on the development, Patamata Circle Inspector K Umamaheswara Rao said, “At the moment, we cannot reveal the accused’s names. The duo have collected lakhs of rupees from people of different states.
They recently even bought a car from that money, which is being brought to Vijayawada.”
Initially, the police were of the opinion that these incidents were isolated cases. But, the issue took a serious turn last Monday when two locals of RTC Colony lodged a complaint with them stating some youths, who approached them in the previous night, demanded a refund.
