VIJAYAWADA: Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, East and West Godavari, Guntur and Krishna districts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh for the next two days.
On Thursday, southwest monsoon was active over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and normal over Rayalaseema, resulting in heavy rains in the districts of West Godavari and East Godavari of Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Due to heavy rains, a fisherman died after his boat capsized in East Godavari district.
Due to heavy rain, low-lying areas of East and West Godavari districts faced the problem of water stagnation, and some roads were damaged at the port area in Kakinada. The district officials are taking swift action for the rescue of Lanka Villages as the water level of Godavari is high. Some places in East Godavari district have inundated with stagnant rain water and in some villages, transport facility has come to a halt due to rise in the water level of Godavari.
Moderate rain occurred in Vijayawada region and Krishna district on Thursday. Light showers were seen all through the day in urban areas, while in the rural areas like Challapalli, Kankipadu, Nandigama and isolated places of the district received heavy rainfall.
Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services and Indian Ocean Forecast System (INDOFOS) issued High Wind Alert, stating that strong surface winds from westerly direction speed reaching 50-55 kmph likely along and off coastal Andhra Pradesh for next few days.
Due to the presence of active monsoon, North coastal region will receive moderate rainfall with heavy winds for the next 3-4 days.
According to the IMD officials, cyclonic circulation over north Coastal Odisha and neighbourhood extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestward. A trough on Sea level Chart runs from Odisha to South Tamil Nadu along and off Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Speaking to TNIE, Weather forecasting officer of IMD, K Naga Ratna said, “For the next 2-3 days, there will be moderate to heavy rains ranging above 7 cm in north coastal regions. From July 14 to July 16, there are chances of low pressure over North Bay of Bengal, moving southwards and resulting in cyclonic conditions. Due to this, heavy winds of speed ranging from 50 kmph to 85 kmph would take place in the coastal region.”
A low pressure area is likely to form over north Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood during next 24 hours.
Warning ignored
A fisherman, Malapalli Durga Prasad (28) died and another, Ganta Prasad, was injured on Thursday morning when their boat capsized. The deceased was from Subbampeta in U Kothapalli Mandal of East Godavari. He had gone fishing with 10 others even after the district officials had asked people not to venture into the sea for three days. Their boat capsized when they were returning to the shore.
