VIJAYAWADA:   Indiscriminate garbage dumping on both sides of the road at Budameru Katta, which leads to New Rajarajeswaripeta, is giving motorists a harrowing time. The residents complain that garbage piles have not been removed for several weeks now. Many allege the road has become a dumping ground for the city builders who discard scrap and construction wastes here during night time, making it difficult for the commuters to navigate the stretch. Despite several appeals made to the civic body, no action has been initiated so far to check the menace, the residents say. Also, indiscriminate dumping of food wastes by commercial establishments has gained momentum over a period of time in the locality.

“The pile of garbage on the road stretch has become a haven for rodents, mosquitoes and stray dogs. Making matters worse, auto-rickshaw drivers and passersby urinate on the stretch,” says R Janardhana Rao, a resident of Ayodhya Nagar. “Adding to our woes, the stretch, at night, has become a hub for alcoholics as there is a wine shop nearby,” he says and appeals to the civic body to address the issues at the earliest.

Many commuters also complain that heavy vehicles plying the road, carrying materials for an under-construction railway-under-bridge in the region, have led to many potholes. ‘’It is the responsibility of the officials concerned to ensure timely repairs to potholes on the stretch before any untoward incident happens,” says K Madhavi, a regular commuter.

Another major problem haunting the locality is the chopped tree branches that are lying on the roadside for sometime. ‘’A week ago, several trees in the locality were cut by the authorities as they posed a danger to the commuters. ,” rues Ch Bhardwaj, another resident.

A senior VMC official, on condition of anonymity, admits that indiscriminate dumping of construction waste and garbage has been noticed by the civic body. Instructions are also given to the sanitary inspector of the locality to launch a cleanliness drive and ensure that the issues are looked after. Commenting on the issue of potholes, the official said the existing road would be recarpeted soon.
