VIJAYAWADA: Following the call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ‘swachata hi sewa’, VMC Commissioner J Nivas and Vijayawada Mayor Koneru Sreedhar took part in a cleanliness drive organised by the Kalki Seva Samithi at Krishnaveni Ghat here on Sunday.
The ghat is affected by environment pollution caused by garbage dumping and idol immersion post puja celebrations. As part of the campaign, Nivas, Sreedhar and corporator Chandana Suresh joined their hands with the members of voluntary organisation to take up the brooms.
Speaking on the occasion, Sreedhar underscored the need of public participation for making the city open defecation free. Awareness campaigns would be conducted at schools and colleges in the city for achieving desired results, he said.
Instructions were given to officials concerned to maintain cleanliness in the region. On the occasion, the voluntary organisation members also expressed their interest to conduct a free medical camp at slum areas across the city. VMC chief medical and health officer, K Arjun Rao, participated in the drive along with 200 volunteers.
