VIJAYAWADA: In an effort to improve on the level of road safety and decrease traffic congestion, the officials of the Road Transport Authority (RTA) have been contemplating to develop multilevel parking facilities at various locations in the city.

A proposal in this regard was submitted by the Deputy Transport Commissioner (DTC) E Meera Prasad to the District Collector B Lakshmikantham, during a meeting on road safety, held recently. In his proposal, the DTC suggested five major locations in the city, including One Town, Panja Centre, Besant Road, service roads adjacent to National Highways and Patamata, where the multi-level parking facilities could come up.

After reviewing the proposal, district collector has given instructions to the officials and has interacted with the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) and the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA), requesting them to provide the necessary infrastructure to speed up the process of developing the multi-level car parking facilities.

Lack of parking lots at the busiest pockets in the city is forcing people to park their vehicles on roads, thereby ending up paying hefty fines for parking vehicles at no-parking zones, not to speak of the traffic congestion such parking creates. A study was conducted to access traffic congestion and parking woes in the commercial hubs across the city. “We realised that a multi-level parking facility would be needed to ensure free vehicular and pedestrian movement as large quantities of land would be utilised for the proposed projects,” Meera Prasad said.

At present the project is in conceptual stage; soon a comprehensive survey will be conducted across the city to identify suitable locations for realising the project at the earliest, he said.
