VIJAYAWADA: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths said they have arrested a woman, who was carrying 980 grams of gold illegally from UAE on September 8 evening and produced her in court. In a press release issued on Sunday, the Vijayawada unit of DRI officials said they received information from trusted sources that a woman passenger was smuggling gold into the country through Vijayawada International Airport in an Air India Express flight and intercepted her on Thursday evening. Upon inspection, the DRI officials found the gold in the form of bangles and chains. The seized gold ornaments worth Rs 50,95,600.

She was arrested and produced in court on Friday. The woman passenger, however, was released on bail on Saturday as the value of seized goods falls under the category of bailable offences.“As per Customs law, the offences involving more than Rs 50 lakhs of smuggled goods are liable for arrest. Accordingly, the passenger was arrested. The passenger was released on bail as the value of the seized goods falls under the category of bailable offences. Further investigation is under progress,” reads the press release.
